I saw the movie Gummo by Harmony Korine in 1999. I was living on my friends couch in the living room in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I remember liking it at once. I saw Kids when it first came out and liked it also, but Gummo blew it out the water for me.
In 2001 I sampled Gummo’s cowboy kids cussing at the rabbit for a song that doesn’t exist anymore. Then in 2004 I sampled the sounds in the film arriving with “Don’t Forget to Water the Radio”. Everything from the percussion to the ambiguous metal and feedback was made with Gummo samples. A demo was recorded, then in 2010 I re-recorded the song with the same exact Gummo Sampled beat and hook, but changed the lyrics slightly. Since 2004 my songwriting became a little less enigmatic. The song was put on my 2nd album “Swimming to Cambodia”.
PS: The title of this post implies there’s only one way to sample aka flip the Gummo sample, but that’s not true at all. Everyone has their own techniques, equipment, ear, style, etc.
Him: I don’t like you. If i was walking down the street I’d punch you.
Me: Why?
Him: I don’t like your whole look, I don’t like your clothes.
Me: Why?
Him: Because you look like a loser.
Me: How come?
Him: Because you’re scum. Guys like you are scum.
Me: How so?
Him: Because I don’t like your pants, they look like waiter pants.
Me: So everyone who wears black dress pants are waiters?
Him: You make me want to punch you right now.
Me: You want to punch me right now because of my pants? Why?
Him: Because you’re scum!
Me: You’re not really good at answering questions. Did you just come over to my table to insult me?
Him: Yes I did.
Me: Wow that’s really adult of you.
Him: (Violently grabs my glasses off my face)
Me: Okay i’m going to ask you as an adult, give me my glasses.
Him: No I’m going to hold on to them for a while.
Me: Oh really? (then to my gf) Okay call the cops.
Him: (Puts the glasses down and walks away)
(30 minutes later cops arrive and he tells them he bullied me because I hit him)
Cops: Well if we arrest him we have to arrest you too because he claims you hit him first and you have no witness except your gf)
Everyone Else: We didn’t see nothing, we just want to party!

Dishes (approx 60 minutes) was originally made for a family member in Iowa and for my friends in Philadelphia. The former asked while I was visiting, “Why not stay here? What’s in California?” and I didn’t know how to explain what I wanted. When I lived in Philadelphia friends would ask, “So how’s LA?” I drew a blank at first, and then as always answered with small talk about the weather. Moments like these were the initial influence that catapulted me toward documenting myself and my company.
Maybe I am proud of my lifestyle and the narcissist in me wants something to display that. I wish that friends who don’t live in LA were here to experience it for themselves and not just my one-liners about the weather, but it’s not that easy. So for the sake of non-LA friends, future friends, sisters, strangers that are foes, and for strangers that are nice and want to be friends, but are too intimidated, I hope this movie breaks some spells or enlightens. It may not be the most readable and comprehensive documentary, but at least others who share my sentiments have a new visual to share that gives people an idea of this Los Angeles community.

My childhood hobbies have included RC Model Car Racing, Putting together BMX bikes, Collecting Fangoria Magazines, Collecting DC Who’s Who Comics, Editing Home VHS movies, and illustrating dead things and monsters. It’s about time I tried painting. Fear of not making something I’ll like was my biggest remora.
At times, walking down the street in Los Angeles may seem chaotic, filled with different personas, egos, and odd characters. But when we slow down to carefully observe those who stand out, we become aware of the art in one’s style. It resonates in the way they move, walk, speak, perform, or create. Over the past few months, I have been examining artists who have literally become the art themselves and have narrowed my analytical focus to four brilliant examples of people who evoke the idea of conceptual style on so many levels: Seraphime Angelis, Yasmine Kittles, Geneva Jacuzzi, and Michael Nhat.
Hey guys, I posted a new self-released EP for you to download free of cost. It includes a new collab with Barrie Rose of Tes Elations which is also the only song on here where I SING instead of rap (as heard on KSPC) and it’s produced by Andrew Felix. I plan on every release I do from now on will have at least one song of only singing. Enjoy!
