“Ya know it doesn’t have to mean anything it can just be something beautiful to watch” – Woody Allen (Zelig)
Dishes (approx 60 minutes) was originally made for a family member in Iowa and for my friends in Philadelphia. The former asked while I was visiting, “Why not stay here? What’s in California?” and I didn’t know how to explain what I wanted. When I lived in Philadelphia friends would ask, “So how’s LA?” I drew a blank at first, and then as always answered with small talk about the weather. Moments like these were the initial influence that catapulted me toward documenting myself and my company.
Maybe I am proud of my lifestyle and the narcissist in me wants something to display that. I wish that friends who don’t live in LA were here to experience it for themselves and not just my one-liners about the weather, but it’s not that easy. So for the sake of non-LA friends, future friends, sisters, strangers that are foes, and for strangers that are nice and want to be friends, but are too intimidated, I hope this movie breaks some spells or enlightens. It may not be the most readable and comprehensive documentary, but at least others who share my sentiments have a new visual to share that gives people an idea of this Los Angeles community.
